ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

August 2020 - December 2022

The Applied Data Science program requires students to complete courses in statistics, data visualization, and machine learning.

Academic courses include graduate-level statistics and study design.

Technical courses include data visualization, machine learning, and big data services. Among the tools students use are Databricks, Google CoLab, AWS SageMaker, R, and Python.

The program requires two semesters of practicum work in which students design and conduct a study on a topic of their choosing. Students then create deliverables to communicate their results.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN PETROLEUM GEOTECHNOLOGY

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON - DOWNTOWN

August 2019 - August 2021

In 2021 I completed the Bachelor of Science in Geosciences with Petroleum Geotechnology degree. The Petroleum Geotechnology degree is a general geology degree with a supplementary petroleum geology class. STEM prerequisites included chemistry, physics, statistics, and calculus. The geology classes included structural geology, paleontology, sedimentology, and field skills. The coursework emphasized writing standardized reports and delivering presentations. I used my GIS and AutoCAD skills to prepare geologic maps cross sections. Special projects included mapping the extent of drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

DATA VISUALIZATION AND ANALYTICS BOOT CAMP
CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY

May 2020 - August 2020

In the summer of 2020 I participated in Creighton University's online data analytics boot camp. The boot camp was divided into two parts. The first part dealt with data analysis in Excel: calculating standard statistical measures, interpreting linear regression models, and creating pivot tables. The second half of the course was training on Tableau. Students learned how to connect to data, do data wrangling tasks, pivot data, and create visualizations. The capstone project required students to create an interactive dashboard, and record a presentation explaining the dashboard to stakeholders.

PETROLEUM DATA TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATE
LONE STAR COLLEGE

2015 - 2017

The Petroleum Data Technology certificate gives students an extensive overview of the upstream oil and gas industry. Related topics covered were petroleum geology, surface vs. mineral rights, parts of a drilling rig, components of a production well, and the geologic characteristics of major hydrocarbon-rich basins.

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS ANALYST CERTIFICATE
LONE STAR COLLEGE

2012 - 2015

The GIS program at Lonestar College trained students on the ArcGIS 10.x suite of programs. I used ArcMap and ArcScene components of ArcGIS to create thematic and general purpose maps. To build maps students downloaded data from government agencies, universities, and nongovernmental organizations. I learned how to use ArcGIS Online to create and share maps via a web interface. As a special project I developed a model to automate the creation of watershed rasters.  Advanced coursework involved statistical analysis of geospatial data.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION IN ECONOMICS
UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS

2006 - 2008

Graduated with academic distinction. Coursework included business communications, microeconomics, macroeconomics, investment analysis, economic development, international trade, and corporate finance. As part of the economic development class I conducted an analysis of how economic trends affect heath and demographic trends in sub-Saharan Africa. In the international trade class a major project involved predicting the exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and Japanese yen, based on economic statistics. The senior capstone course included a case analysis and presentation to distinguished members of the Houston business community.
