ABOUT ME

My areas of specialization are geology, geographic information systems (GIS), and data analytics.

In the geology field my focus is sedimentary geology, specifically, petroleum geology. I studied petroleum geoscience at the University of Houston-Downtown. Before matriculating at UH-D I studied petroleum data management at Lonestar College. The Lonestar classes gave me a thorough education on the upstream petroleum industry.

In the GIS field my area of interest is studying how land use has changed over time. I enjoy creating maps that have a temporal aspect, such as live weather or showing how a geographic distribution has changed over time. While I love exploring spatial data, I am also interested in the backend systems that support GIS work, such as using using spatially-aware databases to store large vector datasets.

I am now studying applied data science at the University of St. Thomas (Houston). Thus far, I have used the R language and associated utilities to solve statistics problems and create static graphs. I am especially proud of the interactive dashboards I created using the Shiny package within R. My favorite data analytics cases involve geographic data.

In summer 2020 I participated in a Data Analytics and Visualization Boot Camp offered by Creighton University. This course used case studies from several fields of business. Among the topics were analyzing employee attrition, quality control, forecasting demand, differentiating between different cohorts of customers, and predicting outcomes for animals in an animal shelter. For the capstone project, students prepared an interactive dashboard in Tableau which enabled executives to study a key performance indicator.

From small, solo projects to creative collaborations, I’m always looking for the chance to explore new venues and learn something new that I can apply to my work. Explore my portfolio, and feel free to get in touch with any questions.

As we are in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, I feel it is relevant to mention that I am well prepared to work from home. I have a stable, terrestrial cable modem Internet connection, a robust desktop workstation with multiple monitors, and VoIP phones with excellent sound quality and economic calling rates. I can send and receive faxes. I own a printer and a scanner. I own several laptops that I keep up-to-date in case circumstances call for working offsite.
